Before we can talk about death, God's judgement and eternal fire there are some basic biblical principles we must learn first. A basic biblical principle is anything that can be clearly seen and taught from Scripture. Everything else must line up with basic biblical principles because if they don't then none of the Bible will make sense.

"The Creation Process"

The first thing we must talk about is the creation process because death is just the reverse process of creation.

Mankind has both an inward man (soul) and an outward man (body). Both of these are needed to experience life.

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
"Video Camera Metaphor"

There are three parts to a video camera; the camera, the battery and the video tape. The camera is the body, the battery is God's life giving spirit/breath and the tape is the soul (memory, character, intellect). If you remove the battery the video camera ceases to work but the memory and character remains on the video tape unchanged.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are body, soul and spirit but notice how in death we are only body and soul because God's spirit is taken at death.

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

God formed the outward man (camera/body) from the dust of the earth. At this point Adam is just a pile of dust until God breaths His life giving spirit/breath (battery) into the dust giving life to the inward man (video tape/soul). At this point the dust becomes a living soul and begins to form thoughts, memory and character. The outward man (body) is the means by which the inward man (soul) expresses itself. The inward man needs the spirit/breath of God to give it animated life and it needs a body to express that animation.

Animation: the state of being full of life or vigor; liveliness.

The soul cannot express life without the body and the soul and body can't live without the spirit/breath of God.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

1 Corinthians 15:45 So also it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living soul."

The breath or spirit is the energy of God that gives life and animation to all living creatures whether that creature is an animal or human being. They all have the same energy/spirit/breath or life force from God.

Genesis 6:17 "Behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die"

Genesis 7:15 "And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life".

Genesis 7:22 "All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died".

Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of lifeand man became a living soul.

Job 27:3 As long as my breath is in me, and the breath of God in my nostrils

When God takes His life giving spirit/breath back the body (outward man) returns to the dust but he himself, pertaining to the inward man (soul), sleeps. At that point his thoughts, feelings and emotions cease.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it wasand the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Psalms 104:29-30…You take away their breath, they die, and return to their dustYou send Your spirit, they are created.

Psalm 30:9 “What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pitWill the dust praise YouWill it declare Your truth?

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

The soul of the person is equated to the life of the person and the life is animation. If you lose your soul you lose your life.

Matthew 16:25-26 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. "For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

The soul or life of a person can stop living without the new birth of being born again through Jesus Christ.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

We also need a new immortal body, which we get at the resurrection. We need an immortal body so that we can experience the joy of living life forever.

1 Corinthians 15:53-54 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruptionand this mortal has put on immortalitythen shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Receiving incorruption, immortality and eternal life is only for the righteous in Christ. If you don't get incorruption, immortality and eternal life you will perish, not live forever.

So where did the belief of an immortal soul come from? It came from paganism and was adopted into the Christian faith just like Christmas, Easter, Good Friday and Sunday as the Lord's day.

"The belief that the soul continues its existence after the dissolution of the body is...nowhere expressly taught in Holy Scripture...The belief in the immortality of the soul came to the Jews from contact with Greek thought and chiefly through the philosophy of Plato its principle exponent, who was led to it through Orphic and Eleusinian mysteries in which Babylonian and Egyptian views were strangely blended" (The Jewish Encyclopedia, article, "Immortality of the Soul").

"God's Eternal Fire"

Before we start this study we must first correct a false doctrine that will cause you to rethink the wicked burning alive forever in a place under the earth called, hell. In order to burn someone alive forever you will first have to be given eternal life and immortality because as it stands right now, no one has an immortal soul.

Ezekiel 18:4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die

James 5:20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

You can search from Genesis to Revelation and you will not find one verse that says we have an immortal soul. If there is no immortal soul, there is no eternal torment. We can stop teaching eternal torment just by accepting that one truth.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die.

Once the soul dies there is no life. There are no thoughts, feelings or emotions in the grave. The grave is just that, a pit or hole in the ground where the dead sleeps. This is a very important true because this truth refutes the false doctrine of eternal torment and pain in a place called, hell. You can't be tormented if you have no thoughts, feeling or emotions.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

Isaiah 38:18 For Sheol cannot thank Youdeath cannot praise Youthose who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they will dieBut the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished.

Psalm 146:3-4 Do not trust in princes nor in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish

Right now, God is the only one who is immortal.

1 Timothy 6:15-17 God will bring this about in His own time. He is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords, the only One who has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; no one has seen or can see Him, to Him be honor and eternal might. Amen.

Immortality and eternal life is a gift for the righteous, not the wicked.

Romans 2:7 Eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality.

1 Corinthians 15:53-54 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

"Reconciling God's Eternal Fire?

The eternal fire of God that consumes sin and life is spiritual. It refers to the holiness of God's character. God is love and His character of love is a consuming fire. Love is the very flame of God that burns forever and it cannot be quenched. Why can't God's love be quenched? Because God is eternal and He does not change.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 “Put me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, jealousy is as severe as Sheol; its flashes are flashes of firethe very flame of the LordMany waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly despised.

If you have not been changed by the glory of God's love your life will be consumed in the presence of God. Remember, no one can even look at God's glory and live.

Exodus 33:18 And Moses said, “Please, show me Your glory.”

Exodus 33:20 But God said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.”

Only those who have been made right by the blood of Christ and are walking in love will be able to stand in God's presence. Remember, the glory of God is a consuming fire?

Deuteronomy 9:3 Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.

Deuteronomy 4:24 The LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

God's glory is an everlasting fire that can't be quenched because God is eternal and His holy character will never change.

Isaiah 4:4-5 The Lord will wash away the filth of Zion’s people. He will clean bloodstains from Jerusalem with a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning. The Lord will create a cloud of smoke during the day and a glowing flame of fire during the night over the whole area of Mount Zion and over the assemblyHis glory will cover everything.

Malachi 3:2-3 But who can endure the day of his comingWho can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soapHe will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness

The glory of God is a consuming fire that purifies. Only those who walk righteously, according to God's definition of love, will be able to stand in the glory of God's presence. The life of the wicked will be tormented and consumed by it.

Isaiah 33:14-16 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fireWho among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil: he will dwell on high; his place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; bread will be given him, his water will be sure.

The consuming fire of God's presence is spiritual. It doesn't burn up material matter, although there is a literal fire from God that can consume material matter. The literal fire of God is used for purifying of the earth after the spiritual fire of God's presence consumes the life of the wicked. There is no need, nor is it scriptural, to put God's glory under the earth in a place called, hell.

To understand more clearly how the fire of God's presence is spiritual, watch how Nadab and Abihu are consumed by the spiritual fire of God's Holy presence.

Leviticus 10:1-3 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his commandSo fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

Their wickedness in God's presence caused them to be consumed. This was spiritual fire because the thing that got consumed was the life of these two men, not their bodies or their tunics.

Leviticus 10:4-5 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

Even when Jesus returns there will be a spiritual fire that consumes and burns up all the life of the wicked.

Malachi 3:2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.

We know this is spiritual fire because Jesus says when it happens the vultures will gather around all the dead bodies of the wicked.

Luke 17:34-37 “I can guarantee that on that night if two people are in one bed, one will be taken and the other one will be left. Two women will be grinding grain together. One will be taken, and the other one will be left.”They asked him, “Where, Lord?” Jesus told them, “Vultures will gather wherever there is a dead body.”

If this was literal fire there would be no dead bodies or vultures, everything would be consumed to ashes. This is the same unquenchable and eternal fire that burns up sin in us when we get filled with God's presence through the new birth.

Luke 3:16-17 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

This is the same spiritual fire that we ourselves go thought in our final cleansing.

Malachi 3:2 “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers' soap.".

Fuller's Soap: Is an ancient process that was used to clean woolen cloth before it was made into garments.

Refiner's Fire:
1. To reduce to a pure state; purify.
2. To remove by purifying.
3. To free from coarse, unsuitable, or immoral characteristics:

1 Corinthians 3:12-15 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

Some will be burned up during the Day of the Lord because the glory of the fiery presence of His glory will destroy them with an everlasting destruction.

2 Thessalonians 1:9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.

Psalm 68:2 As smoke is driven away, So drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

So yes, there is a fire that burns forever and ever. There is a fire that will not be quenched. It's the fire of God's glory. The righteous will dwell in this fire forever and be blessed but the life of the wicked will be consumed by it.

Isaiah 33:15-16 “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fireWho among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil: he will dwell on high; his place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; bread will be given him, his water will be sure.

If God's character is a consuming fire and His glory covers the whole earth in the end then we can say the lake of fire is God's glory filling the whole earth.

Habakkuk 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lordas the waters cover the sea.

Numbers 14: Truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.

The righteous will dwell in the presence of God's Holy fire and will be blessed.

The fire of God is a purifying fire. It will clean up all the old things of the past to make the earth new. Even death and Hades will be done away with.

Revelation 20:14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Revelation 21:3-5 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

"Death and the Grave"

There are two words used for the grave, one is a Hebrew (OT) word and the other is a Greek (NT) word.

Hebrew OT = Sheol = the grave, pit
Greek NT = Hades = the grave, pit

Both these words refer to a pit or a grave, in other words, a hole in the ground where you bury the dead.

Isaiah 14:15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.

Isaiah 38:18 For Sheol cannot thank Youdeath cannot praise Youthose who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.

Job 33:18 He keeps back his soul from the Pitand his life from perishing by the sword.

Job 33:30 To bring back his soul from the Pitthat he may be enlightened with the light of life.

Psalm 30:3 O Lord, You brought my soul up from the graveYou have kept me alivethat I should not go down to the pit.

Psalm 49:9 That he should continue to live eternallyand not see the Pit.

"Sheol" in the Hebrew Bible, and "Hades" in the New Testament. Many modern versions, such as the New International Version, translate Sheol as "grave" and simply transliterate "Hades". It is generally agreed that both sheol and hades do not typically refer to the place of eternal punishment, but to the grave, the temporary abode of the dead. - Wikipedia ~ Encyclopedia

In this pit called, the grave, there are no thoughts, feelings, emotions or life.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they will diebut the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going

Psalms 6:4-5 Return, O Lord, deliver me! Oh, save me for Your mercies' sake! For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?

Later in the New Testament we find the word "Gehenna" which is equated with the "Valley of the Son Hinnom" which was, in OT times, a cursed place where babies were burned in fire as a sacrifice to the pagan god Molech/Baal. Buring people alive in fire is a pagan concept and is something that would never enter the mind of God. Listen to what He says about it.

Jeremiah 32:35 And they built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.’

Our God does not burn people alive forever and ever. Bible translators, who were influenced by the pagan belief of an immortal soul had to invent a place to put the living wicked after death so they invented the word "Hell" and attached the fire of Gehenna to it.
"Gehenna"

The place where children were sacrificed to the god Moloch was originally in the "valley of the son of Hinnom," For this reason the valley was deemed to be accursed, and "Gehenna" therefore soon became a figurative equivalent for "hell." Jewish Encyclopedia

Modern Bible translators connected the words Sheol, Hates and the fire of Gehenna and made them all one place, under the earth called, Hell. Then they said Hell is a place where the wicked are burning alive forever in the eternal fire of God's judgement.  This is all of pagan origin and is not found in the Scriptures. There is a purifying fire of God that brings torment and consumes sin and life but it's spiritual fire.

Luke 12:4-5 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.

When we go back to where the Valley of Hinnom is found in the Bible you don't find a fiery place under the earth nor do you find eternal torment, but rather, you find slaughter ie: complete death.

Jeremiah 19:4-6 “Because they have forsaken Me and made this an alien place, because they have burned incense in it to other gods whom neither they, their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with the blood of the innocents (they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind), therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that this place shall no more be called Tophet or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.

To be cast into Gehenna was to be burned to death like the babies. When we read Matthew 10:28 we find the same topic but we get a clearer picture of total slaughter/destruction of both soul and body in Gehenna, not eternal torment.

Matthew 10:28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

The word, hell, itself is not even found in the original language because it's a transliteration. A transliteration is a made up word that is given a definition and then injected into the Bible. You only find the word, hell, in Bibles that have adopted the word, hell. You won't find the word, hell, in the more literal translations such as the Young's Literal Translation.

"The Judgement is Death"

Death is defined by Jesus and the Bible as a place of silence. Why? Because the dead are asleep waiting for one of two resurrections.

John 11:11-14 After that Jesus said to them, "Our friend Lazarus sleepsbut I go that I may wake him up.'‘ Then His disciples said, "Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.‘‘ However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead

Psalm 13:3 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, Lest I sleep the sleep of death.

1 Kings 2:10 So David fell asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David.

Psalms 17:15. "As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Your likeness.”

Acts 2:29 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

Psalms 115:17 The dead do not praise the Lordnor any who go down into silence.

Without the gift of eternal life and immortality man is mortal, not immortal.

Job 4:17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?

Job 10:5 Are Your days like the days of a mortal man?

Hebrews 7:8 Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.

Without eating from the Tree of Life you cannot live forever.

Genesis 3:22-23 Then the Lord said, “Now that the man has become as we are, knowing good from bad, what if he eats the fruit of the Tree of Life and lives forever?” So the Lord God banished him forever from the Garden of Eden, and sent him out to farm the ground from which he had been taken.

There is no such thing as an immortal soul without the gift of eternal life that comes from Jesus.

Psalms 146:3-4 Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; In that very day his thoughts perish.

Ezekiel 18:4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die.

Ezekiel 18:20 "The soul who sins shall die".

James 5:19-20 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

Immortality and eternal life is the reward that faithful believers get at the coming of Jesus. The wicked do not get immortality or eternal life.

1 Corinthians 15:53-54 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortalitythen shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

The wicked will suffer everlasting punishment with everlasting destruction because of God's presence. It does not say, "everlasting punishing". In other words, the punishment is final, there is no coming back from this death.

2 Thessalonians 1:9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.

Philippians 3:18-19 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction.

Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

Matthew 25:46 And these will go away into everlasting punishmentbut the righteous into eternal life.”

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

The Bible is clear, the wages of sin is death. Not an eternal life of torment.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If the wages of sin was eternal torment in hell then Jesus didn't pay our sin debt. Why? Because Jesus became sin for us and paid our sin debt for us. If He truly paid our sin debt and that payment was burning alive forever in hell then that's where He should still be today. But the wages of sin is death, not eternal torment. So yes, Jesus did pay our sin debt because He died.

Matthew 17:22-23 Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up".

Luke 24:7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’”

1 John 4:10 This is love! It is not that we loved God but that He loved us. For God sent His Son to pay for our sins with His own blood.

No eternal torment for the wages of sin in these verses, only death.

There are some verses in the Bible that seem to say the wicked live forever in a burning place called hell but that would mean they would have to throw out most of the Bible. The gift of eternal life and immortality are only for the righteous. The verses that are use to support the eternal burning of the wicked are metaphorical and spiritual which paint the picture of the judgement of the wicked as being complete and permanent, not that they are alive suffering. The final destruction of the wicked is irreversible and complete. The metaphorical language used in these verses are used as a memorial of the permanency of their judgement, not that they are burning alive forever. Let me give you some examples.

Revelation 14:9-13 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”

The torment that these people feel in the above verse is coming from being in the presence of the Lord. This is a psychological torment. Notice what's happening to these people in the day of this wrath.

Romans 2:1-10 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and long suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

These words, "Tribulation and anguish on every soul of man who does evil" is referring to a psychological torment in the day of wrath. This is brought on because they are unrepented sinners standing in the presence of the Lamb. The words, "on every soul" is referring to their psyche.

Romans 2:9 = Strong's: soul G5590 ψυχή psychē

Now let's go back to Revelation 14 again because we will find that the righteous will experience a glorious rest because they will be alive with new bodies forever in God's kingdom but the dead wicked will be dead with no feelings, emotions or life. They will never experience the glorious rest day or night and the smoke of their torment, not their torment, will rise up as a memorial forever but they themselves will be dead.

Revelation 14:9-13 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Smoke rising up forever is a metaphor for a reminder of the permanency and totality of it's destruction, not that they are being tormented forever. Listen to Isaiah use the same metaphoric language for the destruction of Edom. Edom was destroyed by fire and the smoke of it's destruction rises up forever but Edom does not continue to burn forever because at some point it gets desolate and full of living animals.

Isaiah 34:9-11 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch, her dust into burning sulfurher land will become blazing pitchIt will not be quenched night or day; its smoke will rise foreverFrom generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will ever pass through it again. The desert owl and screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation.

Edom is not still burning today. As a matter of fact, if you go there today you will find it desolate just like God said.

We should not use metaphoric language to form doctrines especially if the doctrines we're trying to form contradict all of Scripture, as well as, God's plan to have a new creation without sin, death, pain, sorrow or crying.

The presence of God is a consuming fire. The eternal fire of God's presence is an everlasting fire the can't be quenched. It torments the wicked unto their death but the righteous will dwell in it forever.

Isaiah 33:14-15 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fireWho among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, he who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil.

There is an everlasting fire that can't be quenched but it's not under the earth in a place called, hell. It's the presence of God glory for our God is a consuming fire that purifies. The righteous will dwell in the glory of God's Holy fire forever but the wicked will be consumed by it.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

Sodom and Gomorrah was burned with the same eternal fire but they and not still burning today.

Jude 7 Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

The life of wicked will be consumed and their bodies will be burned to ashes.

Malachi 4:1-3 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an ovenand all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubbleAnd the day which is coming shall burn them up,” Says the Lord of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branchBut to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calvesYou shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,” says the Lord of hosts.

Notice in the above verse how the destruction of the wicked comes from the presence of the LORD and it takes place in one day. The eternal fire of God burns forever because God is eternal but the wicked are consumed by it.

Psalms 37:10, 11, "For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look diligently for his place, but it shall be no more."

The wicked will suffer torment but the length and severity of their torment will depend on how much wrath they have stored up against themselves by their wicked life styles and behavior.

Romans 2:5-6 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”.

Hebrews 10:26-31 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Luke 12:45-48 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripesBut he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with fewFor everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

This judgement of the wicked will all be done within one day.

Psalm 110:5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.

Revelation 6:17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

2 Peter 2:9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.

Zephaniah 1:15 That day is a day of wratha day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness.

Isaiah 13:9 Behold, the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and He will destroy its sinners from it.

Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth will move out of her place, in the wrath of the Lord of hosts and in the day of His fierce anger.

Job 21:30 For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom; they shall be brought out on the day of wrath.

God is fair and just so the punishment of the wicked is based on what they themselves have stored up for the day of wrath.

"Dying and going to Heaven"

Many people have been taught that when a believer dies they go directly to heaven. The verse they use to support this is found in 2 Corinthians 5:8.

2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

When people quote this verse they say it in such a way as to seem that the moment you die you go right to heaven. To get the correct meaning of Paul's statement you have to 1, read the context and 2, understand what Paul taught in other verses in the Bible.

Let's start with the other verses in the Bible.

When did Paul believe and teach we would be with the Lord? Paul taught and believed that we would be with the Lord at the resurrection, not at death.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Notice how Paul says, "Therefore comfort one another with these words". In the above verse we find Paul teaching about the resurrection as being the time that we would be with the Lord. He then goes on to say, "comfort one another with these words". If people were already in heaven there would be no need to be comforted by the hope of the resurrection.

Now let's go back to 2 Corinthians 5 and read the context. As you read I want you to pay attention to what Paul is talking about in the beginning. I also want you to notice the chapter heading because it reveals the complete thought of what Paul is talking about.

2 Corinthians 5:1-8 Assurance of the Resurrection - For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord

Paul was talking about how we would be getting a new body at the resurrection. He equates the two bodies as one being an earthly house or tent and one being a heavenly one. He speaks of how we lose one to gain the other. After comparing the two he goes on to say how he would much rather be with the Lord in his new heavenly body. Paul was not teaching that when a person dies they automatically go right to heaven. Paul believed and taught that our immortality and eternal life becomes a reality not at death, but rather, at the last trumpet at the coming of Christ to rise up those who sleep in the grave. It's at this time that we get our new heavenly tent.

1 Corinthians 15:51-54 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

The terms "Corruption & Incorruption" in the above verse is referring to the old tent (body) and the new tent (body). This swapping of bodies happens at the resurrection on the last day.

John 5:28-29 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

1 Corinthians 15:22-23 For as in Adam all dieeven so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

The resurrection is the great hope of the Gospel. If people are already in heaven then why the need for a resurrection? Why receive comfort from believing in the resurrection?

Conclusion: God is love and His promise to the righteous is eternal life and His warning to the wicked is death. God would never keep someone alive only to burn them forever. That is a total pagan view of God our Savior. The righteous dead are in the grave waiting for Jesus to wake them up. The eternal fire of God consumes sin and the life of the unrepented sinner. This fire is not under ground, but rather, it's coming from the presence of God's glory. The wicked will be horribly tormented by the fire of God's presence based on their depth of sin and will be consumed and die but the righteous will bathe in God's glory and be blessed. The is no eternal pain, no eternal crying, no eternal suffering or torment because in the end, when all is said an done, death and hades will also be cast in the lake of fire and there will be no more death, pain, crying or sorrow in the new earth.

Obadiah 15-16 “The day is near when I, the Lord, will judge all godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads. Just as you swallowed up my people     on my holy mountain, so you and the surrounding nations will swallow the punishment I pour out on you. Yes, all you nations will drink and stagger and disappear from history. They shall be as though they never existed.n
